Are yogic exercises different from physical exercises?
Yes. Unlike physical exercises, yogic exercises are performed with ease combining regulated breathings, inner awareness and relaxations. The effects of yogic exercises have direct bearing on all vital organs including the brain, as a result of which all the functional systems are toned up. Each organ will be able to function independently and also collectively for the well-being of the body. Physical exercises cause expenditure of energy whereas yogic exercises help in conservation of energy.
Will discontinuance of yoga practice result in side-effects such as obesity, physical/mental diseases?
The fear of side-effects is a myth. Regular practice of yoga will help maintenance of good health. If the practice is discontinued, the effect of yoga on the body and mind also will gradually decline. In the absence of yoga practice, a natural tendency for degeneration of the body may ensue. Body becomes vulnerable to tension and stresses, paving way to generation of diseases. Yoga is not to be blamed for these maladies.
Is it necessary that one must be a pure vegetarian while practising Yoga?
There is no binding on the yoga practitioner to restrict himself to vegetarian food. Regular practice of yoga brings about various disciplines in the individual automatically. The practitioner becomes closer to nature and a tendency to avoid non-vegetarian food is brought about. However, aspirants who desire to do advance yoga involving higher levels of breathing and meditation, have to restrict themselves to vegetarian types of food.
Can a menstruating woman practise Yoga?
It is necessary that during menstrual times women get sufficient time for relaxation. The yogic exercises that induce relaxation are recommended during this period. Exercises that exert direct pressure on the abdomen should be avoided. Relaxation techniques, simple breathing and meditation will immensely benefit women during their periods.
Can a pregnant woman practise Yoga?
The findings in yoga research recommend yogic exercises for pregnant women. Regular practise of yoga will help in smooth child birth. A yoga practitioner begets a healthy child. The exercises must be practised only under the active guidance of a skilled yoga therapist.
Will yoga interfere with the religious faith of an individual?
No. Yoga is a philosophy that accepts all religions as true and that goes together with all religious faiths. The objective of yoga is primarily to attain mental peace. The practitioner can choose his own religious path while practicing yoga.
What is a chronic disease? And can Yoga help?
A disease is branded chronic, when the body suffers from certain set backs due to internal or external influences and projects abnormalities or variations in its functional parameters. (like Low/High – Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Thyroidism etc.) Generally, it is considered that this body condition cannot be brought back to normal without the continuous support of medicines. Often these life-saving medicines produces unpredictable side-effects, causing serious health problems.

Is permanent cure for diseases possible through yoga?
Yoga aims at harmonising the functions of all body systems. It helps in purifying the sub-conscious mind, which is the hot-bed of all diseases. With deep relaxation and ideal breathing techniques, the causes of diseases can be rooted out from the sub-conscious mind. Once this process is complete, diseases will not reappear. Regular practice of yoga is recommended to prevent recurrence of such diseases.
After undergoing treatment at SMYC, is it necessary that intake of medicines and diet restrictions be continued?
If the patient is practising the package of yoga techniques, there is no necessity to continue medicines or observe dietary control. Yoga practice will bring in equilibrium of the body and mind creating a disease-free state. The intake of further medicines will become superfluous. The practitioner can choose the right food for a healthy living.
